Note: Author note: 'Born and bred in the fascist-held Dodecanese; liberated some time after the war only to experience the rigours of the Greek brand of police state first sponsored by the British and later perfected and liberally supported by their American successors, I developed a kind of affection for collaborators and informers. This poem is based on some wartime memories of the latter, a well-known informer in this case, whom I saw jumping off the roof of our house the moment I entered the courtyard one stormy winter night in 1942' (p. 132).
