1 Claudine William Dawson , 1868 single work short story

'Claudine, the daughter of a retired ship's captain, meets and is attracted to Mark Stafford, a young lieutenant who visits her father's house near Southampton, England. A gypsy's warnings, her father's death, a false man, and emigration to Australia intervene before they can be married. This is a disjointed tale with gypsies transferred to Australia, passages of squatting reminiscences, and an unexplained villain who menaces Claudine's life and is killed with a band of bushrangers.' 1 The Fortunes of Kate Annesley William Dawson , 1868 single work short story

'The story opens in a village in the western counties of England. A young artist falls in love with a local girl, Kate A., and resolves to marry her and go to Australia. They put off the marriage till after they land in Australia, and are nearly shipwrecked on the voyage. They marry happily and have a child but the brother and sister who accompanied them on the voyage fall into dissipation, the sister losing her character and dying soon after. The remaining characters return to England and the sister's death is avenged.' (PB)

1 Bob Bunting, The Reefer William Dawson , 1867 single work short story adventure Story of the son of a Devon country gentleman who leaves the family nest to go to sea with the East India company in 1831 as midshipman. Aboard, he is quickly involved in a fight, and becomes the pet of the lady's salon. He slowly learns the ropes of sailing and falls in love on the voyage to India. He goes home to England again a confirmed sailor. (PB)
1 Loved and Lost : A Legend of Mazatlan. A Sequelto the Tale of 'The Whaling Ground' William Dawson , 1867 single work short story The story opens in the harbour of Mazatlan, California, in 1838. The remnants of a shipwrecked crew, including the narrator, enlist on a man-of-war, and are soon caught up in quelling a brigand's attack on the town. While so engaged, he meets a fair Spanish maiden and love ensues. She begs him to rescue her from her aged finacee but he ultimately rescues her and her aunts and sister from brigands instead. (PB)
1 Flora McIntryre's Honeymoon William Dawson , 1867 single work short story Flora McIntyre and Horace Davenport marry despite the opposition of their parents after being stranded for the night on a sand bar near Exeter. Fleeing scandal they honeymoon in a deserted corner of Dartmoor where they are embroiled in the capture of smugglers. (PB)

'Set on a cattle station in Victoria's Port Phillip district in the colony's early days. On the fortunes of the Fairleigh family who emigrated from London after the death and financial collapse of their father. Really a vehicle for descriptions of early colonial life - cattle raising, picnics, romance, alcoholism and suicide, ghosts and weddings.' (PB)

1 Vanessa William Dawson , 1866 single work short story The story opens in rural Devon. Vannessa is an orphaned heiress, daughter of an English army officer and a Spanish mother. She goes to Australia with her guardian and is followed by the clergyman who loves her. She marries her guardian, they settle in Port Phillip. The clergyman marries Rosa, the guardian's daughter. Story includes vignettes of Aborigines and bushrangers. The family returns to England after the gold rushes begin in the early 1850s. (PB)
