The story opens in the harbour of Mazatlan, California, in 1838. The remnants of a shipwrecked crew, including the narrator, enlist on a man-of-war, and are soon caught up in quelling a brigand's attack on the town. While so engaged, he meets a fair Spanish maiden and love ensues. She begs him to rescue her from her aged finacee but he ultimately rescues her and her aunts and sister from brigands instead. (PB)
