The story opens in rural Devon. Vannessa is an orphaned heiress, daughter of an English army officer and a Spanish mother. She goes to Australia with her guardian and is followed by the clergyman who loves her. She marries her guardian, they settle in Port Phillip. The clergyman marries Rosa, the guardian's daughter. Story includes vignettes of Aborigines and bushrangers. The family returns to England after the gold rushes begin in the early 1850s. (PB)
