Story of the son of a Devon country gentleman who leaves the family nest to go to sea with the East India company in 1831 as midshipman. Aboard, he is quickly involved in a fight, and becomes the pet of the lady's salon. He slowly learns the ropes of sailing and falls in love on the voyage to India. He goes home to England again a confirmed sailor. (PB)
