Hall contends that, despite Governor Darling's 'continual denunciation' of the Sydney Monitor, the Monitor's subscribers outnumber those of the Sydney Gazette (the 'official journal') by nearly two to one. Hall further argues that the Monitor's subscribers 'exceed in respectability' those of the Gazette.
