English newspaper first published in 1785 as the 'Daily Universal Register'. Published as 'The Times' from 1788 onwards. Generally referred to as 'The London Times' outside the United Kingdom as a means of distinguishing it from similarly titled newspapers (i.e. 'The New York Times').
