  • English newspaper first published in 1785 as the 'Daily Universal Register'. Published as 'The Times' from 1788 onwards. Generally referred to as 'The London Times' outside the United Kingdom as a means of distinguishing it from similarly titled newspapers (i.e. 'The New York Times').

The publishers of the Times advise that they have become the proprietors of the newspaper 'hitherto known as the Evening Mail'. From 20 June 1868, the newly acquired newspaper will be known as The Mail and published twice weekly.
