BiographyHistory

Poet and musician Maggie Walsh was taken from her mother at the age of three to live in the dormitory at the Palm Island Industrial School, Queensland. Her mother was able to visit her only occasionally and she recalls that she did not really meet her mother again until the age of thirteen.

The children's everyday activities were highly controlled by administrators including curfews, the vetting of mail and segregation from the 'white zones' of social life. They were forbidden to speak their own language. It was in the dormitory that Walsh 'began to find a form of escape "into my own mind" ... by writing poems.'
