Peter Stevens is a Guruma (Kurrama) elder and was born at Hamersley Station in the Pilbara region of north-west Australia. He was raised in the traditional way, learning the customs, songs and stories of his people. 'An experienced and skilful bushman, he was born and raised on Hamersley Station, moving to Rocklea Station at an early age, working as a station hand for much of his early adult life.
'Ngimaliny Stevens had a long association with Pilbara Iron and was greatly respected by all who knew or met him. He was instrumental in the negotiations that facilitated the Marandoo mine and the Eastern Guruma Land Use Agreement. He was also heavily involved in the cultural heritage management of his country, which includes the land associated with the Brockman, Nammuldi, Tom Price and Marandoo mines.
'He moved to Karratha in the 1970s and worked for CMM on Hamersley's rail line for some 20 years until he retired in 1989. He remained very active in retirement, dividing his time between family, his role as spokesperson and teacher of the Guruma culture and making a range of traditional wooden tools and implements. He delighted in sharing his culture with all who showed interest and was particularly concerned that young people gain knowledge and appreciation of traditional ways.
