Two schoolteachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, become concerned by the unusual behavior of their fifteen-year-old student, Susan Foreman. When they follow her home, they meet her mysterious grandfather, the Doctor, and find themselves unwilling passengers on his time ship. The first episode deals with Ian and Barbara's discovery of the Doctor and the TARDIS in a junkyard in contemporary London. The following three episodes are set amid a power struggle between warring Stone Age factions.

Drawn into the orbit of the planet Vortis, the Doctor and his companions (Barbara, Ian, and Vicki) encounter three sets of non-humanoid inhabitants: the Zarbi, the Menoptra, and the Optera. The Zarbi are under the control of a sinister, spider-like central force, the Animus, which uses gold as a conductor for its mesmerising power. After a disastrous ambush of the spearhead Menoptra force attacking the Animus, Barbara manages to destroy it with an act of concentrated willpower. With the Zarbi freed from the Animus's malevolent control, they, the Menoptra, and the Optera are free to live on Vortis, while the Doctor and his companions leave in the TARDIS.

In 2018, the 'Australasian Zone' is controlled by the Salamander, a dictator who controls a population frightened by a recent apocalypse–and who bears a striking resemblance to the Doctor.
