  • The correspondence is introduced in lengthy editorial notes by the editors of the newspapers in which the correspondence is published.

    The editor's note in the Perth Gazette reads in part: 'His discoveries from Fowler's Bay to King George's Sound, are given in detail, in the following communication addressed to the Government Resident at K[ing] G[eorge]'s Sound.'

    The Sydney Monitor editor's note begins: 'After an absence of nearly fourteen months, Mr. Eyre has returned to Adelaide, having successfully accomplished the overland journey to Western Australia. His reports of the expedition are full of interest, and, in a geographical point of view, exceedingly valuable.' This note is possibly taken from the South Australian Register.

This almost full page item, contains the depositions of Edward John Eyre and Wylie, detailing the events surrounding the death of John Baxter, Overseer of the expedition, and the disappearance of two Aboriginal men, Joey and Yarry, associated with Edward Eyre's exploration journey from Adelaide to King George Sound in Western Australia in 1841.
