Stella's illness is shown to resemble female Neurasthenia, a nervous condition identified in the 1860s and believed to arise from the pressures which social conditions place on the individual. The woman's illness, impacting on the domestic situation, then placed the woman in a position of 'power'.

In Poems Brennan sees through the "material", which is Australia, to provide "as complete a poetic statement of the pressures of a colonial situation as Henry Handel Richardson's The Fortunes of Richard Mahony".
