Winners

2011 winner y separately published work icon Life Without Me Daniel Keene , 2010 Strawberry Hills Melbourne : Currency Press Melbourne Theatre Company , 2010 Z1629694 2010 single work drama
2010 winner Whore Rick Viede , 2009 single work drama

'Young, fearless and full of wanderlust Sara finds herself in London selling cleaning products in a call centre.

'Then she meets Tim, and her path takes an unexpected turn. For these two Aussies living it large in London everything is exhilarating, delightfully dangerous and full of possibility. When a body is discovered in the apartment upstairs the thrill of anonymity gives way to rising horror as Sara finds herself at the very edge of the person she once was.

'With originality and poetic wit, 'Whore" is an unflinching exploration of the price of freedom, ambition and the high-risk ride that is coming-of-age.'

2009 winner y separately published work icon Realism Paul Galloway , 2007 Strawberry Hills : Currency Press , 2009 Z1561082 2007 single work drama

'In the summer of 1939 in a small Moscow theatre a company of actors begins rehearsals of a new play to commemorate Stalin's sixtieth birthday. It's a tough gig, because for Soviet artists working towards the Radiant Future the old showbiz maxim "the show must go on" is an order you can't refuse.

'Another opening, another show trial! Realism is a comedy of nerves, a backstage farce set in a pressure cooker. It's about the spirit that makes art live and the forces that want to crush it.' (Publisher's blurb)

2008 winner y separately published work icon When the Rain Stops Falling Andrew Bovell , 2008 Strawberry Hills : Currency Press , 2009 Z1430823 2008 single work drama (taught in 8 units)

'It begins with a miracle. On a rainy day in Alice Springs in 2039 a fish falls like manna from heaven to bless the reunion of a father with his long lost son. Perhaps it's a sign that the pattern of betrayal and abandonment that began on another rainy day in London in 1959 will come to an end.

'Who'll stop the rain? Andrew Bovell's award-winning When the Rain Stops Falling is powerful storytelling in which the voices of our past echo into our future.' (Publisher's blurb)

2007 winner y separately published work icon Embers Campion Decent , 2006 Hobart : Australian Script Centre , 2006 Z1280895 2006 single work drama 'An account of the fires that ravaged the communities of Victoria's northeast and Gippsland in January 2003; the heart-stopping tales of survival, the awe-inspiring courage and endurance of communities put to the test, the spine-chilling evocations of the wave of heat that roars through pristine valleys - and the mountains of sandwiches volunteers anxiously prepared.' 2006 winner y separately published work icon Mrs Petrov's Shoe Noëlle Janaczewska , 2006 Brisbane : Playlab , 2013 Z1262526 2006 single work drama (taught in 4 units) 'In the afternoon of 19 April, 1954 Evdokia Petrov, wife of a recently defected Soviet spy, was dragged, weeping and with one foot bare, across the tarmac at Sydney's Mascot Airport to be sent back to the USSR. Forty years later, in 1994, Helen Demidenko released The Hand That Signed the Paper about her experience growing up a Ukrainian Australian, to widespread critical acclaim - before being unmasked as not quite the person she claimed to be. The play revisits both of these startling events and explores Cold War Australia fears of Russian spies and 'Reds under every Bed'. 2005 winner y separately published work icon Black Hands/Dead Sections Vanessa Badham , 2005 Hobart : Australian Script Centre , 2005 Z1218148 2005 single work drama Focuses on the activities of the Baader-Meinhof gang.
2004 winner y separately published work icon Run Rabbit Run! Alana Valentine , 2004 Strawberry Hills : Currency Press , 2004 Z1091109 2004 single work drama

'Alana Valentine's play is a verbatim piece about the battle to overturn the decision to exclude the South Sydney Rabbitohs from the NRL. Based on extensive interviews with both public faces of the campaign including George Piggins, Andrew Denton and Nicholas Pappas, and grassroots supporters such as Mark Courtney, Barbara Selby and Marcia Seebacher, this is a story of passion and politics that goes beyond football.'
