AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The script held in the Crawford Collection in the AFI Research Collection contains the following character notes (excluding regular characters):

'LITTLE JOE: Seven years old. An introvert, a dreamer, but quite a tough child. Must run and swim well.

'MRS. BIRCH: A formidable lady of about fifty-five to sixty.

'SYLVIA: Little Joe's mother. Working-class girl. A little at a loss as far as copying with Joe goes.'

      Note/s:
      • The Crawford Collection includes two copies of the script, both copied on blue paper, both labelled 'Code: 12509', and neither showing any indication of to whom these copies of the script were designated. Both copies have two cover pages: an illustrated outer cover page and a second cover page showing cast details and episode duration.
      • Copy 1 shows no sign of annotation.
      • Copy 2 is annotated throughout in red ink, seemingly in the same hand as annotated episodes 1-8. The annotations are alterations to dialogue (see, for example, page 6, where an anecdote about Hogan's childhood has been edited to remove the details about Hogan's father: 'He was a big man, you see, and always ready to give his son a belting'), and deletions of scenes and parts of scenes (see, for example, page 5, where again the alteration removes some bitterness from family relations, by deleting Mrs Birch's complaints that her son is 'Too busy to send his old mum a Christmas card' and that the 'Old place ain't good enough; them's going on a cruise.'). The annotations also expand scenes: see, for example, pages 16-17, which shows a detailed expansion of a scene between Mrs Birch and Joe. There is a high degree of annotation throughout the script.
      • The file also contains the following ancillary materials:
        1. Cast list: a type-written cast list, with no confidential information.
        2. Printed cast list, showing actors' contact information.
        3. 7pp. copy of the script stripped to nothing but dialogue, copied on white paper. This script incorporates the alterations to dialogue and deletions of scenes made in copy 2 above.
