First, it refers to the literal correspondence, which O'Dowd initiated in March of 1890 and that continued till late 1891 before Whitman's death the following March. Second, the paper will trace out the thematic correspondence between the work of the two poets, particularly with regard to a shared poetics of cosmopolitanism and nationalism...' (197)
