  • On Monday, 11 October 1841 the Sydney Monitor published the following note explaining its deferral of the finalisation of 'Dr Polding and the Chronicle':

    'Notwithstanding that the Chronicle is angry with us for what it facetiously terms our "continued" and "to-be-continued" analysis of its pretended reply to our article on Doctor Polding's speech, we shall, nevertheless, pay no sort of attention to the Chronicle's good-natured hint, but shall continue the controversy as long as we please, and shall end it at our own convenience. The subject is a good one, and will keep. Therefore, we defer our concluding article until Wednesday next [13 October 1841], which will afford the Chronicle two clear days to determine whether to SUBMIT to the LIE, is more in accordance with the "DIGNITY" of its cause, than to REFUTE the LIE.' The sectarian debate eruprted over a lecture delivered in late September 1841 by Roman Catholic Bishop John Bede Polding. The Chronicle, a Catholic newspaper, supported Dr Polding's views on the colony; the Monitor, whose sympathies lay with the Church of England, opposed them.
