Notes

  • At head of poem: The scene is laid in a prison, where the Pirate is supposed to be with a Friar, previous to his execution. - Shortly before the Friar's entrance he has taken poison to save himself from the disgrace at a public execution; suddenly after refusing to acknowledge his God, he hears the tolling of the bell for his execution, and at the same moment, feels the poison taking effect, and rejoices at having cheated justice.
