Notes

  • Author's note: Don was a retired circus pony owned by the Heysen brood. He dragged they sled up the slope near Hans's studio time and again for the six older children to clamber abroad and streak to the bottom (until Don calculated he had done enough work for the day, after which all Hell would not move him). 'Don' also alludes to the master of the house himself, quietly painting inside his studio.
