  • Author's preamble: 'I am really suprised that your correspondent should lavish so much poetical genius on one so unworthy [of] such effusions. If the ebullition of such loving sentiment had poured into the ear and heart of another, perhaps the action would have been more good. If, however, he must write a poem, and if nothing less than a poem could express the poignancy of his feelings, he might have written in something like the following strain, which I prepared for the occasion -'
