The subject of this satirical piece appears to have been the New South Wales M.L.A. Robert Burdett Smith (1837-1895), who represented the electorates of Hastings (1870-1880) and Macleay (1880-1889) and later served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council (1889-1895). During the later 1870s and early 1880s, Kendall lived at Camden Haven, which was located within Smith's electorate. Smith became a frequent target of Kendall's satirical pieces and poems.
