The subject of this highly satirical poem was the lawyer and New South Wales M.L.A. Daniel Deniehy, who had lost his seat at the recent election. Deniehy was routinely lampooned and attacked in the Empire for having changed his political allegiances upon election to parliament and for having supposedly forgotten his humble colonial origins.
