  • Here the author describes themself as 'Full Private, S.Y.C.'
  • Halloran had been a lieutenant in the Sydney Yeomanry Cavalry, a colonial volunteer corps formed in ca. 1854. From the poem it appears that there had been a dispute within the ranks over the choice of uniform.
