Author's note: Written after the first Jewish Disabilities Bill had passed its first reading in the House of Commons.
[AustLit note: The Jewish Disabilities Bill finally passed into law in 1859; it provided basic civil and political rights to Jews, including being able to take a seat in Parliament, and removed restrictions that had been in place since the Middle Ages. In the period 1847-1859, the Bill passed in the House of Commons in successive readings, but failed in the House of Lords.]
