Concerned with the political and practical divide between free selection and squatting in the Murray/Murrumbigee area of New South Wales, this epic poem parodies Longfellow's 'Song of Hiawatha'.

  • Author's note: 'Recommended to the attention of the Free Selection Democrats in Sydney'.
  • Serialised in The Southern Courier in three instalments published on 8, 15 and 29 March 1861.
  • Advertised on page 3 of The Southern Courier issue 3 May, 1861 as 'The Song of Separation': 'We have to inform those who desire to purchase copies of the first book published in Deniliquin, that they are now on sale at the office of this paper, price eighteen pence. Those at a distance who require copies can have them forwarded by post remitting two shillings in postage stamps'.
