Australia’s first Royal visitor was Queen Victoria’s second son, Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburg, the younger brother of the future King Edward VII. Prince Alfred toured the Australian colonies in 1867, receiving a rapturous welcome everywhere, his stay in Melbourne being marked by some unusual festivities, the most remarkable of which forms the basis of this amusing story.
