Notes

  • This sequence was published in the Empire in 1855. It consists of six satirical poems on each of the 'non-official' nominees to the New South Wales Legislative Council. At the time, the Legislative Council was comprised of nine 'official' nominees (ie. office holders such as the Colonial Secretary), six 'non-official' nominees, and the elected members.
  • Extract from editor's note accompanying Song No. 6 : 'As the object in these rhymes has been to immortalise the half-dozen nominees who assisted the four squatters, Messrs. McLeay, Morris, Hood, and Osborne, and the Government officials, to double the taxes on the tea and sugar of the whole British people in this colony, in defiance of the "people's representatives"...'
