  • Author's note: A fable propagated by Mr. R. Montgomery Martin, but without foundation in fact.
  • The note appears as a footnote to the second line of the second verse: 'Our flowers without scent and our birds without song,'
  • Robert Montgomery Martin (1803?-1868), Irish born author and civil servant, published works on the British Empire including a five volume work, History of the British Colonies (1834-5).
