'The central difference between SF and Australian narrative turns on the relationship with the environment, and its effect on the protagonist. And in contrast to the US myths, Australian narratives are tales of loss and alienation rather than success. Clearly, such patterns of hopelessness will cut across the optimistic geek narratives of SF.'
