This poem reflects contemporary calls for the construction of a rail link between Hobart and the West Coast. One surveyed route, favoured by many, followed the Derwent Valley line to Glenora and continued west through the Vale of Rasselas. It was never constructed; the Emu Bay Railway, running south from Burnie to Zeehan , opened in 1897.
