  • Editor's note: Lines written by Garnet Walch, and spoken at the Melbourne Town Hall, on Friday, October 25, 1889, by Mr. M. Callender, at the Lecture by Superintendent S. Mauger, entitled "Some of the Great Fires of Modern Times," in aid of the Firemen's Relief Fund.
  • The poem is divided into three sections: 'Proem', 'The Fire!', and 'Epilogue'.
