Based on Byron's The Corsair (1814), the same poem which had been the source of Verdi's Il Corsaro, this 'new Grand Opera in three acts' was staged for the first time at a benefit evening for its composer. The opera was preceded by Herold's overture to Zampa, and during the course of the production a new grand Turkish Pas de Trois was presented by the Misses Griffiths and Signor Carandini.
