The second newspaper of this name, The Cairns Chronicle was launched in January 1885 by proprietors William Doyle Hobson, A. J. Draper, and Dr. E. Myers and published by Henry Barr. Sold around November 1885 to pay libel costs, the paper was purchased again in November 1889 by William Hobson as sole proprietor, who changed its name to The Cairns Argus.

The Late Libel Action 1887 single work column
— Appears in: The Cairns Post , 4 May 1887; (p. 3) A heated condemnation of the jury's decision in finding the former editor of The Cairns Chronicle, Mr E. Draper, not guilty of libel against the Police Magistrate, Mr Chester. The writer states the verdict confirms the belief that it is impossible to secure a conviction for libel in North Queensland. He further suggests people who believe they have been libelled are better off paying the fine for physically assaulting their libeller than trying to secure justice through the courts.

— Appears in: The Cairns Post , 4 May 1887; (p. 2) In Townsville last Monday Mr E. Draper, former editor of The Cairns Chronicle, appeared before Judge Cooper charged with libel against the Police Magistrate, H. M. Chester. His Honour spoke adversely to the defendant, but the jury acquitted him after deliberating for four hours.

— Appears in: The Cairns Post , 20 January 1887; (p. 2) The correspondent refers to a case against the editor of the Cairns Chronicle, E. C. Draper, and the threats allegedly made by the paper to obtain advertising for a land sale. The letter quotes a telegram he received from the proprietor, W. D. Hobson, stating 'New Cairns not being advertised in Chronicle; recommend you to take this hint immediately. (Signed) W. D. Hobson, August 19, 1886'.

— Appears in: The Cairns Post , 30 December 1886; (p. 2) On Christmas evening Mr Frederick T. Wimble publicly horsewhipped the editor of the Cairns Chronicle. This 'disgraceful fracas' took place in Abbot Street and was in response to an attack on Mr Wimble's social and private life in the paper's column, 'On Dit'. The writer acknowledges the need to criticise public men, but condemns the intrusion into their private lives, declaring this is not in the public interest.
