Young Mildred Gresham arrives in the new colony from England to serve as a governess on a Midlands estate owned by family friends. Running off into the bush during a fracas with the natives, Mildred is rescued by Ernest Marsden and realises that she really loves Ernest - '[of whom] it might be truly said ... that he was of the stuff of which heroes are made' - rather than his older brother Valentine. They plan to settle down, just as the colony itself begins to 'settle down'.
