Aitken discusses some of the political context around the time of Wright's Miles Franklin Award win, and also states that the novel 'is not an activist tract.' He discusses the narrative and the style, and concludes by stating that Carpentaria 'is the most surprising novel I have read this year, not least because of its astonishing optimism.'
