Dedication: In keeping with the philosophy of community theatre, MARY was devised by working closely with members of the community over a twelve month period - Doncaster East High School Year Eleven drama students, (1981,) Box Hill Greek orthodox Youth Club, (EON) and many individual Greek women of all ages. This play is dedicated to them.

Author's note: When I began the process of researching Mary I was very conscious of the fact that I was a fifth generation Australian attempting to write a play about the experiences of Greek women living in Melbourne. ...However, the more I felt I was understanding the essential qualities of 'Greekness' the more I felt the need to reflect and articulate those qualities inherent in my own cultural background and value system. Thus, the decision to juxtapose a Greek-Australian family with that of an Anglo- Australian one; not to make qualitative comparisons, but to highlight points of similarity and difference....
