AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'This book tells the story of young Croatian men who left conflict in Europe and the families they loved to earn a living in the harsh mountain environment of a foreign land. [...] This series of oral histories expands our understanding of the migrant contribution beyond the stereotypical manufacturing workplace. [...] The book is also a celebration of Australia's multicultural heritage. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority contracted companies from Norway, France, America, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Britain. The workforce engaged by these companies and the Authority was even more diverse, with some 100,000 workers representing more than 30 nations.' -- From the 'Foreword' by John Aquilina, Minister for Education and Training.

Notes

  • Printed for the 50th Anniversary of Snowy Mountains Scheme.
  • Dedication: This book is dedicated to the Croatians who in the process of building a better tomorrow for their adopted country lost their young lives. May we all remember them with fond respect, just as we fondly enjoy the fruits of their sacrifice.
  • The 'Author's Note' explains how as a young man Saravanja left Yugoslavia, lived for a short time in a refugee camp in Italy, then contacted two friends who were living in Australia. One replied that he was working on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. 'I could hardly have imagined,' Saravanja reflects, 'that I would one day write a book dealing with a part of its truly amazing history' (p. 9).
  • Includes 'A Short History of Croatian Migration to Australia'.
