A 'sambrowne' or 'sam-browne' is a belt incorporating a diagonal shoulder strap which once formed part of the day to day uniform worn by Australian army officers. The belt was made popular by General Sir Samuel James Browne VC, a 19th century British Indian Army cavalry officer. By the mid 20th century the sam-browne became a ceremonial dress item.
