Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing
Jerome Murif ((1861 to 1865)-1926) was an Irish Australian engineer, bushman and author. His From Ocean to Ocean provides an account of his solitary journey by bicycle from Adelaide to Port Darwin. The short narrative is comprised of concise passages that describe Murif's adventure as it unfolded. Written in a conversational manner, Murif emphasised the heat and thirst associated with the journey, as well as observations of the Aboriginal people, which were derogatory. This work was prefaced with an advertisement for Dunlop bicycle tyres and rims - used by Murif, and which contributed to the successful completion of his trip across the Australian continent.
