AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'In Patrick White's work the artist is a recurring figure. This figure is most fully realised in the portrait of Hurtle Duffield in The Vivisector, the novel which is central to this thesis. Through a comprehensive exploration of a creative consciousness White has been able to give multiple perspectives to the Australian experience and relate it to the contemporary human situation.' (Introduction, first paragraph.)
