Dedication: To my great-niece, Synolda Joan Margaret Munro-Spencer, whom I have never seen without her goose. Some day, perhaps, she will deign to read these few pages about an ordinary boy. That she may become, like many women of the Empire, worthy of the title of this little book, is the hope of her great-uncle.

The title is referred to in the text as 'baby talk' for the term 'mentioned in despatches'.
