Peter Craven comments on some of his personal choices for outstanding Australian literary works and wonders why they are so poorly known in 2007. He is fearful that Australian children will, in future, know little of their rich literary heritage. Craven concludes: 'The many-mansioned house of Australian literature will be a ruin that no one bothers to enter. One day, perhaps, it will be rediscovered and people will sigh at the Australians of 2007 and think "What philistine pigs they were."'
