Notes

  • Author's note: On 31 December 1877, the writer and two friends decided to honour the arrival of the New Year with a 'feu de joie'. They uncorked and drank 'one dozen of real good beer' and fell asleep instead. The next day, the writer 'felt somewhat annoyed at Bacchus for his audacity' and offered the 'following apology to the newly-born year'.
