        Ferguson comments: 'appended to which is: 1862. A Colonial Directory; including Sydney, Melbourne, and New Zealand.' The British Library notes of the first edition 'No more published in this form.'

        Ferguson also sighted subsequent editions numbered 14534 and 14535.

        Later editions were published in 1863, 1864 and a three volume fifth edition in 1864-1865. The British Library notes with regard to the fifth that 'Vol.1 only is of the fifth edition.'

      • Includes 'Opinions of the Press' and 'Extracts From Letters Addressed to the Author of "Number One"'.
      • Two chapters describe a visit to Australia and New Zealand. The author notes in the fifth edition preface: '...some of the incidents in the present volume may be found sufficiently romantic to satisfy even novel readers. Yet this is anything but a novel. Many of the events recorded herein are literally true. Others are founded on truth, though they may have been partially furnished by fancy.' December 1864.
