AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'The play attempts to redefine appropriate conduct in a new yet old place and time that the central character Billy personifies. Boundaries of behaviour are challenged across class distinctions, sexual relations, racial tensions and religious beliefs, as are the very notions of authority and civilisation. Also confronted are the mysteries of violence and desire, and the place of truth ina hypocritical society. All mixed in the crucible of a small and isolated community.' Aarne Neeme. Programme Note.

Production Details

  • First produced at the Bats Theatre, Wellington, on 16 August 1989. O'Sullivan comments: 'The part of Billy the Aboriginal is played by a New Zealand actor. This is only partly because of availability. It is also because a play is not reality, and the theatre is neither a social report nor a photograph. That is what acting means.' Programme Note.
