— Review of A Little Tin Plate and Other Verses Garnet Walch , 1881 selected work poetry ;
'The author, who needs no introduction to anybody interested in Australian literature, modestly calls his work verses. But it would be far from the truth to conclude therewith that this little volume contains no poetry. Garnet Walch's gifts of expression are not extraordinary, and he has done well, no doubt, to spend his strength upon his prose writings; but he has pathos and humour, and these are rare and precious endowments...'
