Peter Wherrett tells the story of Australian overland motorist Francis Birtles who drove his modified Bean 14, known as the Sundowner, on a 281-day journey that took him from London through Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and on to Melbourne via Darwin in 1927. Birtles was the first person to complete the 26,000 kilometre trek.
