The Birth of a Literature, single work criticism
This column attempts to define Australian literature and gives many examples of works from a variety of writers and poets in the period from the end of the 19th Century to 1934. The author states that Australian literature can be defined thus: '...what is Australian literature? The answer is that writings about Australians or by Australians are literature in so far as they assist man's understanding of man. But they will be in a category of Australian literature in so far, further, as the writers possess or expound attitudes which appear to be peculiar to persons breathing Australian air, in so far as they interpret the circumstance which we lump under the designation Australian. An Australian literature is a body of writings sufficiently descriptive as far as each goes of influences which make Australian life what it appears to be.'
