Ryan reflects on his friendship with mining geologist Frank Hughes. Ryan and Hughes went to school together and later served in Papua New Guinea during World War II. In the early 1980s, the two men renewed their friendship when Hughes invited Ryan to accompany him on a trip to the Lae district to 'look at the old spots again'.
