The author argues that "The Engish Departments of Australian Universities should build their courses around the growing body of worthwhile Australian literature, encouraging, by understanding criticism, higher standards. The courses should then link it to the rich past of English literature (out of which it has grown) and to the literature of other Dominions and of America."
